New Delhi: Cancer can strike anyone at any anytime, including those who are leading a healthy lifestyle. Heart disease and cancer are the leading causes of death in both men and women. In India, as many as 11,57,294 new cancer cases and 7,84,821 deaths were reported in 2018, as per the GLOBOCAN 2018 data. Earlier, WHO report also showed that the Big C has afflicted more Indian women than men – although more men died due to the disease than women. Breast, cervix, lung, gastric and oral cancer are the most common cancers among Indian women. While there’s no magic food guaranteed to prevent cancer, a good lifestyle, including eating a healthy diet, can definitely lower your risk of developing the disease.

Studies have shown that certain foods can help fight as well as lower your risk of cancer, particularly when eaten as part of a healthy diet. The truth is that many foods contain beneficial compounds that could help stop or decrease the growth of cancer cells. Best anti-cancer foods to include in a healthy diet

Broccoli

Apart from being one of the healthiest foods, broccoli contains sulforaphane, a compound that has been shown to have anti-cancer properties. Research found that sulforaphane reduced the size and number of breast cancer cells by up to 75 per cent.

Beans

Beans are rich in fibre, which may help protect against colorectal tumours and colon cancer. Carrots

Carrots are an excellent source of carotenoids and other vitamins and phenolic compounds that may reduce the risk of certain cancers due to its cancer-fighting properties. For instance, carrot consumption has been linked to a decreased risk of prostate, lung and stomach cancer.

Turmeric

Studies have shown that curcumin, the active ingredient in turmeric, has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-cancer properties. The spice is well-known for its ability to stop or reduce the growth of many types of cancer.

Garlic

Research has found that garlic contains many nutrients that can help fend off the cancer cell growth. Eating more garlic has been linked to a decreased risk of certain cancers, including stomach, prostate and colorectal cancer.
