Winters are here and while we’re all looking forward to the feasting and snuggling, it is important to take care of health as well. Like any other season, winter also demands special dietary and lifestyle adjustments to prepare the body for the cold weather. Staying hydrated may not look like an important thing to do during winters, as we don’t lose a lot of sweat during cold weather. But as in summers, drinking enough water and retaining it in the body is important during winters as well. Staying hydrated may seem like an easy enough thing to do during winters, but it may not be so for a number of reasons. For one, dehydration is much less noticeable during winters, than it is during summers as you don’t notice how much sweat you’ve lost under all those layers of clothing.

For another, the dryness in the air may dehydrate our bodies quicker than we can imagine and most often we don’t even feel thirsty, so our need for adequate water may remain unmet. The effects of dehydration may be subtle and hence, less noticeable during winters, but it’s important to work pre-emptively to replenish the fluid reserves of the body, in order to avoid any physical discomfort in the future.

1. Drink Warm/Room Temperature Water: After exercising during winters or even generally, one should drink beverages or water which is at room temperature. This is because cold water/liquids get absorbed faster in the body.

2. Eat Fruits/Veggies With High Water Content: Eating a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables with high water content is also a great way to stay hydrated. Load up on strawberries, oranges, pineapple, lettuce, celery, tomatoes, carrots, spinach, cucumber, etc.

3. Limit Consumption of Alcohol/Caffeine: Although it’s extremely tempting to indulge in hot teas, coffees and alcohol during winters, both alcohol and caffeine may dehydrate your body, so excessive consumption of both is not recommended.

4. Eat More Soups/Broths: Salty foods like soups and broths are healthy and may help in retaining water in the body. They also have the added advantage of warming you up from the inside.

An earthy touch: A dip in the pool can beat the summer heat but it can leave behind a severe tan on the skin for months. Try a mixture of Multani Mitti (mineral-rich clay) along with few drops of lemon and rose water. After your time in the sun, mix the ingredients and apply on exposed areas. The paste cools the skin. Also apply coconut or olive oil liberally over body parts that are exposed to chlorinated water.

Spice up your life: Water in swimming pools contains disinfectants like iodide and chlorine, which cause skin problems like acne flare-ups, rashes and red patches. Cinnamon has great anti-microbial properties. Add a few drops of honey and aloe vera gel to cinnamon powder to fight bacteria-causing acne. The mixture also keeps the skin moist.

For a golden glow: Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and cleanses pores from within. Grind neem leaves with water and mix it with one tablespoon of turmeric powder. Apply the paste on the face with few drops of rose water to clear up skin after acne break-outs and also to reduce scars naturally.

The secret mantra: To avoid the contagious skin diseases and allergies caused by swimming in public pools, Ayurveda recommends adding neem leaf extract to bathing water. If you cannot organise a fresh extract every day, pick body cleansing products that have “neem” or “tea tree oil” as their main ingredient.

For make-up

* Go light: In summer, less is more should be your mantra. The lesser the products you use, the lighter your skin will feel and make-up will not feel heavy. It is highly recommended to use products with anti-bacterial properties. Replace your foundation with a concealer to hide imperfections and feel light. Products with SPF of 30++ at least are a must. BB creams are also a great option as it is a combination of moisturiser and tinted foundation. Use light water-based products and cut down on make up products to less than half.

* Multitask with your makeup : Invest in a product that does it all — for the lips, lids, and cheeks. Simply choose from a range of summery bright or light lip and cheek tints as it will add a healthy glow with minimalistic colour.

* Switch to waterproof: Invest in waterproof eyeliners, mascaras and eye pencils. With the temperatures rising, one tends to wipe of the face regularly. This might, at times, end up in either smudging or fading make-up. Choose between a highly or lightly pigmented waterproof eye products.

* Cocktail of products: Prepare your hair using a cocktail of smoothening and anti-frizz serums to smoothen your hair and get rid of frizz at the same time.

* Shortcut to volume: Wash and condition your hair with a volumising shampoo and conditioner to combat limp and sticky hair. Prep your hair with volumising lotion before you blow-dry to give your hair volume.

* Beach waves for days: Boho-inspired beachy waves are the ultimate summer hair-do. Apply curling mousse on wet hair and scrunch it up in a bun. Use tongs to achieve the wavy look. You can also opt for dry shampoos to fight the stickiness on your hair.
